A collection of 40 illustrated postcards in a box, following the route of the novel Around the world in 80 days on Google Street View
by Lehel Kovacs
About this project
Jules Verne’s “Around the World in Eighty Days” was one of my favorite books when I was a kid; I always hoped that one day I would get the chance to relive all the adventures that are in the story by travelling around the world myself. Although it’s not quite what I had hoped for, but since Street View is available in so many places I found it very interesting to search for the locations that are in the book and (being an illustrator) to draw them. So this is why I started this series a few months ago and now that I clicked all around and back came to London, I want to produce them as postcards.
The postcard box set contains a series of 40 images, some of the them showing the exact locations that are mentioned in the book, for example the Reform Club, the Savile Row 7 or Charing Cross Station in London, Le Gare du Nord in Paris, International Hotel in San Francisco or Broome Street in New York. Others are close to railway stations and harbours. Unfortunately, at the Suez Canal Street View is not available, so no postcards from there.
The route is: London, Dover, Calais, Paris, Mont Cenis, Torino, Brindisi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, Sacramento, Reno, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Des Moines, Chicago, Fort Wayne, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, New York, Cork, Dublin, Liverpool and back to London.
